Welcome
Hello! I am a fourth year Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Informatics at UC Irvine co-advised by
Gary Olson and
David Redmiles. They, together with
Gina Venolia, form my dissertation committee.
Gillian Hayes and
Peter Krapp are the remaining members of my candidacy committee. They provide me with inspirations and fresh perspectives. Most importantly, they help to keep me sane and grounded throughout the Ph.D. process.
I share the same laboratory spaces with many wonderful colleagues, including
Ellie Harmon and
Fernando M. Figueira Filho at the Hana Haven, and
Gerald Bortis,
Roberto Silva Filho,
Benjamin Köhne,
Nilmax Moura,
Tiago Proença,
Wiwat Ruengmee,
Francisco Servant, and
Erik Trainer at the Continuous Coordination Lab.
My closest collaborators are
David Nguyen,
Matthew Bietz,
and
Judy Olson.
Currently, I am researching on
GroupMind.

Work
In between UCI and CMU, I worked at
IBM's
Almaden Research Center in San Jose, CA in 2006,
WebSphere Business Integration in Austin, TX in 2005, and
Printing Systems (acquired by
Ricoh Company, Ltd. in 2007) in Boulder, CO in 2004. I also did two
Extreme Blue internships in Spring 2005 and Summer 2007, and a research internship in Summer 2008, all at the ARC.
During my time with IBM, I was a major contributor for the following projects:
Koala/CoScripter (2008), Maricopa/Sasquatch (2007), eMerridy/Rel8/Enki (2006),
WebSphere Integration Developer (2005),
WebSphere Process Server (2005),
J9 JVM (2005),
Performance Inspector (2005),
InfoPrint Manager (2004), and
InfoPrint Server (2004).
In college, I interned at
MSC.Software's
High Performance Computing (HPC) division in 2002 (now a division of
Hewlett-Packard Company), where I worked on
MSC.Nastran and
MSC.Linux (now
HP Linux), and managed supercomputer built on
BladeCenter clusters. I also worked part-time at UCLA's
SEASnet Computing Facility as a system administrator throughout my UCLA career.
Current Project
GroupMind

Brainstorming is a collaborative activity. GroupMind is a large group display that will connect to participants' laptops (local and remote) to foster brainstorming. Our current exploration uses mind-maps as the underlying mechanism for brainstorming. Development has involved retooling an open-source, single-user java application to be multi-user. We conducted multiple in-lab experiments to understand GroupMinds impacts on brainstorming activities and are continuing to explore how this and other technologies can support group collaborative creativity activities.
